Plants Resistant or Susceptible to Verticillium Wilt

Trees

    Resistant or Immune - beech, birch, conifers (all), crabapple, dogwood, eucalyptus, hackberry, hawthorn, honey locus, hornbeam, katsura tree, mountain ash, mulberry, plane tree, poplar, sweetgum, sycamore, and willow.

    Susceptible - ash, black locust, box elder, camphor tree, carob, carrotwood, catalpa, cork tree, elder, elm, flannel bush, fringe tree, golden-rain tree, horse chestnut, Japanese pagoda tree, Kentucky coffee tree, linden*, magnolia, maple*, oak*, peppertree, persimmon, Prunus sp., redbud, Russian olive, sassafras, serviceberry, smoke tree, tree of heaven, tulip tree, tupelo, walnut, and yellowwood.

Shrubs

    Resistant or Immune - arborvitae and juniper.

    Susceptible - fuchsia, heather, lilac, privet, rose, sumac, and Viburnum sp.

Vegetables

    Resistant or Immune - asparagus, bean, lettuce, and pea.

    Susceptible - cabbage, celery, cucumber, eggplant, melons, pepper, potato, pumpkin, radish, rhubarb, and tomato*

Flowers

    Resistant or Immune - African violet, ageratum, baby’s breath, hollyhock, periwinkle, primrose, and zinnia.

    Susceptible - aster, begonia, carnation, chrysanthemum*, dahlia, geranium, impatiens, peony, petunia, snap-dragon, and sunflower.

Fruit


    Resistant or Immune
    - apple and pear.

    Susceptible - barberry, black raspberry, blackberry, grape, Prunus sp., raspberry, Ribes sp., strawberry*, and watermelon.

Weeds

    Resistant or Immune - grass and all monocots.

    Susceptible - dandelion, groundsel, lambsquarters, nightshade, pigweed, sagebrush, shepherdspurse, and velvetleaf.

Field crops

    Resistant or Immune - corn and all monocots.

    Susceptible - alfalfa, clover, cotton, hops, mint, rapeseed, and safflower.

Miscellaneous


    Resistant or Immune
    - cacti, ferns and gymnosperms.

* Resistant cultivars or species are available.

Note the discolored vascular system due to Verticillium in these longitudinal sections of a vine maple branch.
